Current Positions
Dame Clara Furse is Chairman of HSBC UK plc and a Non-Executive Director of Vodafone Group plc and Amadeus IT Group SA. She is also a member of the Panel of Senior Advisors to Chatham House, and a member of Bocconi University’s International Advisory Council.
Industry Knowledge
Dame Clara’s career has spanned a broad range of global financial markets, initially at UBS where she was a Managing Director and Global Head of Futures. During the 1990s she served as a Non-Executive Director, Committee Chairman and Deputy Chairman of LIFFE, the UK’s first financial futures exchange.
She became Chief Executive of the London Stock Exchange Group, a FTSE 100 company, in January 2001, retiring in May 2009. Dame Clara was an External Member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee, joining the new statutory body and macroprudential regulator in April 2013.
She has been a Non-Executive Director of Euroclear plc, LCH Clearnet Group Ltd, Fortis SA, Legal & General Group and Nomura Holdings Inc., and was the Lead Independent Director of the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions.
Dame Clara was also a member of the Shanghai International Financial Advisory Council (SIFAC) and in 2012 she chaired the Lead Expert Group of the UK Government’s Office for Science Foresight Project on the future of computer trading in financial markets.
