Walter Kielholz

Walter Kielholz began his career at the General Reinsurance Corporation, Zurich, in 1976.

In 1986 he joined Credit Suisse, where he was responsible for banking relationships with large insurance groups.

He joined Swiss Re in 1989, becoming an Executive Board member in 1993, and was their Chief Executive Officer from 1997 to 2002. He was Vice Chairman from 2003 until he was nominated Chairman in 2009.

Board Mandates

Mr Kielholz is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Swiss Re Group.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse Group AG from 1999 to 2014 and served as Chairman from 2003 to 2009.

Mr Kielholz is Vice Chairman of the Institute of International Finance and a member and former Chairman of the European Financial Services Round Table, which brings together Chairmen and CEOs of the largest European financial institutions.

He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Avenir Suisse, a Swiss think tank for social and economic development, and Chairman of the Zurich Art Society, the organisation promoting the Kunsthaus Zurich.


In 2005 he was elected by the members of the International Insurance Society to the Insurance Hall of Fame.
