Philippe Varin

Philippe Varin is a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole des Mines de Paris.

He began his career in 1978 as a researcher for the Pechiney Group and later held various executive positions within the Group. He was Managing Director of the Aluminium Sector and a member of the Group’s Executive Committee.

In 2003, he joined the Anglo-Dutch steel group Corus as Chief Executive Officer and in 2007 he was also appointed to the Board of Tata Steel.

Mr Varin was appointed Chief Executive Officer of PSA Peugeot Citroën in June 2009 and left the Group in June 2014.

He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Areva, 'Le Cercle de l’Industrie' and a Special Representative of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development for ASEAN countries.

Board Mandates

Mr Varin has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Areva since January 2015 and a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Directors of Saint Gobain. He was a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Tata Steel (India) until 2009 and of EDF until May 2016.

He has been the CEO of Corus and of PSA and has served on the Boards of BG Group and Faurecia.


Mr Varin is an Officer of the French Légion d’Honneur and Chevalier of the National Order of Merit. He is also Commander of the British Empire.
