Niall FitzGerald

Niall FitzGerald was Chairman of Reuters and Deputy Chairman of Thomson Reuters between 2004 and 2011. Prior to this he was Chairman and CEO of Unilever from 1996-2004.

Mr FitzGerald joined the boards of Unilever plc and Unilever NV in 1987 and served respectively as Finance Director, Foods Director and Detergents Director until his appointment as Chairman and CEO in 1996. During his Unilever career, he worked and lived in Ireland, the Netherlands, South Africa, the USA and the UK.

Board Mandates

In October 2013 Niall FitzGerald was appointed Chairman of the Board of Brand Learning Partners Ltd., having previously been Chairman of Holdingham Group (Hakluyt & Co.). He remains as Chairman of Hakluyt's International Advisory Board. He is currently also Chairman of the Leverhulme Trust, Munster Rugby Commercial Board, UCD Graduate Business School, and NiJaCo. He is a Senior Advisor to Allen & Co. and a Member of the Mitsubishi International Advisory Committee. He also Chairs the Board of Governors of Cumnor House School in West Sussex and is Patron of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce. 

Mr FitzGerald was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Museum (2006-2014); a member of the World Economic Forum Foundation Board (2001-2011) and the Spencer Stuart Advisory Board (2004-2011). He has been co-Chair of the Investment Climate Facility for Africa (2006-2010), Chairman of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Trust (UK) (2004-2008), the International Business Council (2006-2008) and of The Conference Board (2003-2005), and co-Chairman of the Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) (2004-2005). He has been Non-Executive Director of Merck (2000-2003), L.M. Ericsson (2000-2002), Bank of Ireland (1990-1999) and the Prudential Corporation (1992-1999). He has been President of the Advertising Association (2000-2005).

He has also been a member of South Africa's International Investment Advisory Council, a member of the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the Kok Commission on the Lisbon Agenda, a member of the Accounting Standards Review Committee, Chairman of the CBI Europe Committee and member of the International Policy Council for Agriculture and Trade.


In 2015 Mr FitzGerald received the Distinguished Service Award from the President of Ireland.

Mr FitzGerald was awarded an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire in 2002, and holds a number of honorary doctorates from American, British and Irish universities. He has also been the recipient of numerous other awards for his work on global business issues, including the Society of Chemical Industry Centenary Medal (2004); BritishAmerican Business Transatlantic Business Award (2005); Royal Dublin Society Gold Medal for Industry (2006); Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship (2008); Business & Finance Award for Outstanding Business Achievement (2008); Perlmutter Award for Excellence in Global Business Leadership (2011).
