Baroness Hogg

Baroness Sarah Hogg has extensive experience of business, government and the media, having worked at the highest level in all three sectors. She was the first woman to become Chairman of a FTSE 100 company, and has sat on eight other FTSE 100 Boards.

Early in her career, she was responsible for the economics coverage of a number of Britain's most respected publications, including The Economist, The Times and the Daily Telegraph. She was involved in the start-up of The Independent, hiring and managing its award-winning business team from 1986 to 1989.

Thereafter Baroness Hogg was Head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit from 1990 to 1995 and was closely involved in the programmes of privatisation and private finance, performance measurement in public services and international economic issues. She was the Prime Minister's closest adviser on the Uruguay round of trade negotiations.

Board Mandates

Baroness Hogg is Chairman of the Audit Committee at the John Lewis Partnership and Lead Independent Director of HM Treasury. She is a member of the Takeover Panel and (from April 2016) a Non-Executive Director of the Financial Conduct Authority.

She has been Chairman of the Financial Reporting Council (from 2010 to 2014) and of 3i Group, Europe's largest listed private equity company (from 2002 to 2010).

She is a Non-Executive Director of The Times Newspaper Holdings Ltd. since December 2014.

Other boards of which Baroness Hogg has been a member include BG Group (2005 to 2016), GKN, the dual-listed company Carnival Corporation and Carnival plc., as well as Cadbury plc. She was also the Founding Chairman of Frontier Economics Ltd. 

She is a Trustee of Lincoln Heritage Trust and of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.


Baroness Hogg has recently been awarded the Lifetime Award of the 2017 Non-Executive Directors awards.

She was created a Life Peer in the 1995 New Year's Honours List, received the CBI Lifetime Award for Women in Business in 2005, and has received many honorary fellowships.
